Chapter 18

Atlanta - Monday

On Monday morning, Sasha’s cell rang at 6:50 a.m. It was the limo driver calling to say he would arrive at the hotel in approximately thirty to thirty-five minutes. Tired, she could use the extra thirty minutes to pause and sit still. Between the wedding chaos, too much doing the Wobble and Electric Slide, plus two glasses of champagne, her legs ached. Add to that the drama of forcing herself to navigate Elaine’s cutthroat stares for most of the night. Not easy.

Grateful for the prearranged ride to the airport, the anxiety of waiting for an Uber or shuttle diminished. Thanks to Wesley. Sasha picked up the phone, called the front desk, and asked them to send a bellhop in twenty minutes. She did a last scan of the room and spotted her pepper spray on the dresser. She stuck it in her purse and waited for the bellhop.

Sasha wasn’t surprised that the limo driver was the same one who had taken her and Wesley to the picnic area and the wedding rehearsal. He pulled along the curb in front of the hotel, got out, and opened the back door of the limo. Sasha walked to the car.

“Good morning, Ms. Edmonds. Be careful stepping in. I’ll load your luggage in the trunk.”

“Thank you.”

She stepped inside. A white envelope with her name handwritten on the front lay on the seat. The driver slid behind the steering wheel and glanced back at Sasha.

“Mr. Dunbar asked me to make sure you got that.”

“Thank you,” she said, opening the envelope. She removed a colorful card with a picture of a small tree. Inside the card, another larger tree covered one side. Good Morning, Sweetheart. This gigantic tree shows how much I’ve personally changed and grown because of you. I really enjoyed my time with you and hate to see you leave. I may have good news about the medication trials soon. Call me after you get home. Love, Wes.

Sasha smiled and slipped the card inside her purse. She pondered Wesley’s words and the past several days. She wondered whether there were any trials in progress or if Dunbar Pharmaceuticals was ever going to receive the medication, but she shoved those thoughts aside. He’d been kind to her and had no reason to do something that underhanded. All the incidents that occurred this weekend seemed like a dream. Day by day, a new adventure, whether negative or positive, unfolded. At least she accomplished her most crucial goals−participating in the wedding, closing the contract with Dr. Douglas, and starting a new relationship. Maybe. Now she had another goal of tackling the other side of her life.

She arrived at the airport and handed the skycap her driver’s license, watching as his friendly smile changed to a frown.

“Mmm…sorry. I’m rechecking,” he tapped the computer keys. “As I suspected. Your flight’s been delayed, Ma’am.”

“Delayed?” Sasha shifted the strap on her computer bag to the opposite shoulder. “When did this happen?”

“A short while ago. The plane in Detroit left late.
